From Sept. 11th to October 19th I was in Scotland and Erin & Jayelle were in MI. I missed them terribly and could hardly speak about them without tears. Erin would periodically send emails that spoke to my heart and I felt loved by her. I caught myself reading them over and over.
Why is it that we don’t approach God’s Word in this way?
I had a chance to think about this question more two weeks ago when I gave a talk on Christian hypocrisy for UCCF. Christians can be hypocrites in more ways than just what we hear about in the news. We preach, teach, and live a checklist Christianity, which kills an intimate relationship with Christ. We think we are “good Christians” because we do good things. We keep the law! We go to church every week! We read our Bibles!
I challenged this by using the example of Erin’s letters to me. I read them over and over, and called her everyday because I love her. I didn’t need an accountability group to ask if I spoke to my wife that week.
In terms of Bible reading, we often read it because it is part of the checklist we must accomplish.
Therefore we struggle giving time to God or his Word. It is just a checkmark rather than time with our bridegroom, who we are desperate to see and love. We fail and become hypocrites when we are motivated by our need to be “good” rather than our affection for a God that is good.
I pray the CU grabs on to this and runs with it!
