July NewsLetter

Hello Family and Friends,

As many of you know Dave has been accepted as a postgraduate student at New College of the University of Edinburgh. He was accepted into a one year Ph.D. preparatory program in historical theology that starts this September. The University of Edinburgh is one of the leading research universities in Britain and Europe, and theology has been taught since its founding in 1583. This is an incredible opportunity for us and we are ecstatic about the possibilities of attending such a celebrated university.

Dave has also received an exciting opportunity to be affiliated with the ministry of Student Ministries Inc (SMI). SMI is a nonprofit organization that enables him to be involved in ministry as well as to receive mentoring and accountability for personal development. SMI allows involvement in various ministry activities in both the church and parachurch setting that could foster specialization in one area or a variety of ministry experiences.
SMI contracts with students like Dave to work a set number of hours per month in ministry and to receive compensation for those hours from funds resourced through financial supporters giving to SMI. This is an excellent way for a team of partners to be involved with the ministry of SMI as they prepare the next generation of ministers to increase their effectiveness for ministry. Currently, SMI has approved for Dave to work with UCCF, the United Kingdom’s version of InterVarsity, where he will be working directly with college students and teaching throughout the UK. By 2010, 50% of 18–21year olds in the UK will be studying in university or college. Of these 3.5 million students, 300,000 will be internationals. Most will know little of Jesus. We have been drawn to this calling because of the great need, but also because of the stage in life students find themselves in. College students are questioning who they are, who they want to become, and other difficult big questions about life. Many at this time will walk away from their faith, some will discover who they are in Christ for the first time, and others may even return to their faith. We want to be there for them and to help with the tough and life long questions they face as college students.

We have wanted to return to a college campus ministry since we left Western Michigan University and we can’t wait to work with college students once again. This ministry experience will help prepare us for the future ministry to which God has called us. It is our responsibility to form a team of ministry partners who will support SMI with monthly financial commitments and prayer. And because SMI is a recognized nonprofit organization, all contributions given to SMI are tax-deductible. SMI, as a member of the Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability (ECFA), is held to the highest standard of accountability for their financial transactions, and we’ve enclosed more information about SMI.

We have agreed to raise $3500 per month for the ministry of SMI. Will you prayerfully consider partnering with SMI on a monthly basis financially and through prayer? Enclosed is a response card and envelope for you to communicate how God is leading you to participate in this ministry. We will be calling you shortly to discuss this opportunity and answer any questions you may have. May the Lord continue to richly bless you and your family!

Love, Dave, Erin, & Jayelle Searight
